Astro Invader is the first arcade game published by Stern Electronics. It was created by Konami and released first in Japan under the name of Kamikaze by Leijac.
The Japanese version has some differences. Most noticeable is that it has more columns and that the UFOs only appear in the middle of the screen. It also has regular aliens that attack on the sides of the screen without going through the columns. Aliens that crash into the ground has a greater blast radius than in the US version.
An Astro Invader machine appears in the music video for the 1982 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song "You Got Lucky". The band finds a working one buried under some junk in an old barn, and eventually Petty knocks the machine over.
